Bergen Orgelsommer - Bergen International Organ Festival - Oskar Hydle

Saint Paul's Catholic Church (Sankt Paul katolske kirke) is a Roman catholic churchsituated in the heart of Bergen, close to Nygårdshøyden and Lille Lungaardsvann.

Oskar’s first encounter with an organ was at 12 years old, when he tried the local organ in Ulvik, where his grandfather used to work as an organist. He immediately started taking organ lessons with his tutor Amund Dahlen, at the Catholic church in Bergen. Oskar is an active member of the Ferdinand organ club for young performers, and last summer he even gave his first solo concert at his local church, Slettebakken kirke. He also regularly plays at church services, especially throughout the previous year, as part of his school work experience and confirmation preparations. Despite being only 14 years old, he is unfazed by the more challenging pieces, creating «deadlines» for himself while practicing systematically. This is probably why he prefers the dramatic dexterity of toccatas by Bach, Böellmann, Widor and Hovland. However, his all time favourite piece is «Carillon de Westminster» by Louis Vierne.

In the future, he plans to do his A levels in music at the local high school and later pursue his dream of becoming a professional organist for a living. Possibly in Paris, Oxford or Cambridge, where he could combine his organ studies with his other passion, which is birdwatching!

Bergen international Organ Festival - 29 June till 24 August
Sundays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, respectively in Bergen Cathedral, St. Mary's Church and St. John's Church. In addition, concerts in Nykirken (the new Church) and St. Paul's church.
